Motor Selection Criteria – Inductance Value

The inductance value of a stepper motor has multiple effects on its performance, which can be summarized as follows:

  • Inductance and Torque Relationship: A higher inductance value results in greater torque output. This is because a larger inductance generates a stronger back electromotive force (EMF) during current changes, which enhances the motor’s torque.

  • Inductance and Speed Relationship: Generally, stepper motors with higher inductance values experience a faster decline in torque once the speed exceeds 300 to 500 RPM, compared to motors with lower inductance values.

  • Inductance and Current Response: As the inductance increases, the impedance to current change (i.e., inductive reactance) also increases. This can lead to insufficient current to flow through the motor quickly, impairing the dynamic response of the motor.

  • Low-Speed High Torque Requirements: If higher torque is required at low speeds (300 to 500 RPM), a motor with a higher inductance value should be chosen.

  • Fast Response Requirements: If a fast response speed is needed, a motor with a lower inductance value should be selected.

  • Comprehensive Considerations: Therefore, the choice of inductance value for a stepper motor should be based on the specific application requirements to ensure the motor’s performance aligns with the operating conditions.

For example, considering the models PKP264, PKP266, PKP268, and PKP296, if higher torque is desired at 1000 RPM, the preferred choice would be a motor with a lower inductance value (below 4 mH per phase), while also selecting the appropriate phase current to match the needs.
